I show parts of stories with my paintings. They depict a moment in time, like a snapshot out of my imagination. I started painting in high school and continued to paint through college (although I didn't major in it). It was after college, when I was in my 20s, that my style really began to take shape.
I grew up in Portland, Oregon and I have lived in Seattle for many years. The landscape of the Coastal Northwest has really influenced my vision over the years. Lately I have been traveling in Eastern Oregon and Washington and am finding some of that imagery coming to the surface in my current work.
Some other things that I think about when painting (in no particular order) are: ghosts, animals, family, ordinary people, famous people, Coney Island, buildings (solid and falling apart), water and windows.
Other painters and musicians are a great inspiration to me. Some of my biggest inspiration has come from John Register, Joni Mitchell, Milton Avery, William Cumming, Neil Young and Ben Shahn. I am also very inspired by the “ordinary” beauty around me every day.
